Purpose
AS/RS (automated storage & retrieval system) ensure continuity of operations for transportation, search, placement and unloading of goods. Automatic systems operate in constricted passes at a height of up to 45 m 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, minimizing the impact of human factor and significantly increasing the productivity of warehouse operations.

Description
The throughput capacity of classical palletized goods storage systems is limited by the productivity of staff. At the same time, emergencies and malfunctions often occur at enterprises with high turnover. Automated systems take warehouse logistics to a new level, ensuring efficient use of space and maximum speed of work.
Automated storage & retrieval system is a complex of high racks installed with minimal working corridors that are served by stacking cranes. By picking up a pallet at the beginning of a racking row, the stacking crane moves the cargo to the required bin at the WMS system command, eliminating human participation in the pallet placement process.
Equipping a warehouse with the AS/RS system not only increases cargo density per unit area, but also increases reliability, speed and accuracy of work. When we are talking about hundreds of acceptance and unloading operations per day, and the warehouse works in 3 shifts and at the same time does not really cope with the load, then it is time to think about the feasibility of the warehouse modernisation.
The use of the AS/RS system will be a rational choice in the following situations:
- large product flows with a limited number of items;
- warehouse area from 10,000 m²;
- the logistics center works in two shifts or 24/7;
- acceptance and shipment of goods takes place by whole pallet norms;
- there are difficulties in attracting and retaining qualified warehouse staff.
The stacking crane system movement horizontally at 2-4 m/s with the simultaneous variation of the positioner height provides incredible productivity of the system. The configuration with telescopic forks allows you to service racks of double depth.
There are modifications of stacking cranes capable of moving two pallets at the same time. This significantly increases the speed of cargo handling.
The AS/RS system is equipped with software for identification and control of goods, which provides the necessary processing speed, reduces the number of errors during placement, sorting and inventories.
Since stacking cranes are much more expensive than the rack systems, it is rational to design such warehouses high and long, minimizing the total number of robots. However, the configuration of the warehouse will depend on the required performance in each case.
